A to Z Challenge – Day 22 – V

V

Victory

Emily goes to a regular high school and follows her Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
Because Emily goes to a school we chose and not to the one in our neighborhood, we have to drop her off and pick her up daily.Β  We’ve been doing this for 6 years now and we have one more to go.
One thing I really enjoy is our daily chit chat after school.Β  I ask Emily specific open-ended questions on her day and I get small details here and there.
I love this.
Having a conversation with Emily, my girl, the one who was never supposed to talk, understand us and show emotions.Β  The one with the rare diagnosis of Cri du Chat Syndrome.
I cherish those moments and today was no different but one of Emily’s answer made me “over the moon” happy!
I asked Emily what she did in culinary tech and she answered:
“I conquered my fear!”
Her smile was even more beautiful than usual!
I asked for more information and here is what I got!
Emily doesn’t want to use the oven but today, her Educational Assistant (EA) warmed-up the oven and put empty pans in it.Β  Emily had to open the oven and remove the pans.
She did it!
She won!Β  The victory is hers, she faced her fear and won!!!
This is huge for Emily and reminded me that she had another similar victory last week when she used the electric mixer.Β  Between the safety guidelines, the power, the noise and the vibrations, this wasn’t something Emily wanted to do but slowly, she did it!
My girl is awesome!

“Victory belongs to the most persevering.”
